MORNING SKILLS ACADEMY
During the 2013/2014 and 2014/2015 seasons I worked in Esbjerg, Denmark as an Assistant Coach with the Professional team that plays in the Danish Elite League, and Skills Coach for the Elite Morning School which was only for the top prospects on their U18, U16, and U14 teams. All together I had 12-14 skaters where we worked only on individual skill training. Our purpose was to do the fundamentals more efficiently than before and then faster with resistance. Twice a week we would train on the ice from 7-8:00am and then the players would be off to school. In the two years I saw tremendous growth from almost every individual. At least 8 of these players played on the U20 / U18 Danish National Teams at some point in the last 4 years, including Niklas Andersen, 2015 CHL Import Draft Pick Spokane Chiefs WHL and Christian Wejse, 2016 CHL Import Draft Pick Blainsville-Boisbrand QMJHL. This Morning School concept in Denmark is the biggest reason why the Danes have made great leaps in their hockey program and have been a solid representative in the U20 and A pool World Championships in the last 10 years. Starting Fall 2024 7th year MENTORSHIP I will also offer the other side of the game, mental preparation and all the other intangibles that young players need to know. I have over 30 years experience as a player, coach, and WHL scout. With only 16 skaters I will have plenty of time to interact with you on the ice and give invaluable tips on all aspects of the game which includes: game day preparation, off ice training tips, nutritional tips, and probably the most important of all, WHAT COACHES AND SCOUTS ARE LOOKING FOR from young prospects and how to attain these attributes which separate you from the rest of the crowd! Our objective is to use the full 60 minutes every session to consistently work on the fundamentals and then progressively amp up the pace and difficulty so the athlete is constantly being challenged and learns how to cope outside their comfort zone. We will work a lot on puck control and puck possession skills so you will have many puck touches every session, way more than any other practice that week. The small area games will help improve individual puck protection skills while being pressured to make plays in tight areas. There will be individualized training from time to time once I have established where the student might need extra repetitions in a particular skill. |
